quiksilver holiday party 2009.

by josh on December 17th, 2009

good times, open bar, live band, and plenty of random buzzed induced conversations. least here it’s not really your typical corporate holiday party. you know, the kind where it takes a couple of drinks for people you’ve seen for the last year to finally get friendly….and then it’s back to pretending you don’t know each other the following day. my last job was like that…..but fortunately everyone here is already chill so it was really just a matter of meeting some new peoples. which was a really good thing factoring all the fallen soldiers we lost due to layoffs. definitely a nice treat to unwind for a night downtown disney style.

zane hosts the best tv show in the world ever! three sheets…..which is basically just him traveling the world and getting wasted in different cities. hahah…it is actually educational though, as he does a great job of showing the culture and specific boozes to the region. not sure how his comedy will be, but it’s all geared around booze too….so needless to say i am sure i’ll tip a few too many back.

*cheers*

weekend wrap up.

by josh on November 3rd, 2009

ok, so as i stated on sunday, i really wasn’t in the mood to write a whole dealio here due to the copious amounts of alcohol still straining through my defunct liver.

but to quick wrap up the halloween weekend? first it started at venice beach. i hadn’t been there in a few years so i figure it’d be fun to go bum around there for the afternoon. i had to be at my buddy’s place in culver city later that afternoon, so….made perfect sense as he was just a shot down venice blvd. from the beach. if you saw the pictures in the previous post, obviously that can sum up venice beach that afternoon…..but just to touch on a subject that maybe can’t be seen. i forgot how friendly people were there. everyone was out enjoying the day and enjoying the people around them. it was refreshing in a sense that isn’t often seen too much in the ol’ orange county. it was a true melting pot of folks too. from the 60 year old white dude playing basketball with the ballin’ brothers to the sore thumb midwest tourists finally realizing what kinda “medicine” can be enjoyed in the 2 story green clinic. heh. it was a great day, and filled with nods of acceptance in a land that seems to sometimes forget how to be neighbors.

after that it was onto my friend laith’s place. a few pre-concert beverages and catching up was in order while were waiting for his lady friend that was stuck being our chauffeur for the night. it’s really great that we’ve been able to reconnect over the years. see, i always thought of him as a good friend back in high school….and add in the fact he is really the only one i know from 10 years ago that is braving the socal vibe….and well, it’s just nice some familiarity in the mix. even better, it seems as we’ve both changed over the years….we have done so on similar levels. well, i mean minus the fact he spends his time trying to cure HIV and i am fixing shitty photography. hahah.

on to echo park and the dead man’s bones concert. traffic sucked because of all the freaks trying to get into the hollywood gala….so we were a little late. however, it being saturday night in los angeles, the show conveniently waited for us rockstars before it got started. as i said to 2 other gals waiting in line, “it’s LA, everyone is fashionably late.” speaking of waiting in line….as i was standing there i saw a familiar face. walking right past me was this girl that i had just seen a few hours ago on venice beach. she was at beach doing a little dance routine to michael jackson’s thriller. was freakin’ hilarious because of course i belted out a half buzzed “hey! i saw you on venice beach today!” she nodded and her entourage shared a laugh with me. fuckin’ awesome…again, only in los angeles.

the dead man’s bones show was pretty much everything i was hoping for and expected. a small small show in a seedy bar with halloween costumes passing us by in a blur. the highlight was by far a cover of bang bang (my baby shot me down) that featured this little girl from the choir on vocals. i can’t find a video from our show, but here’s one from the chicago show: -click to view- overall though, they rocked it. a perfect choice for a halloween night boogie.

after that it was back to culver city….then to another bar….and then a nightcap of in and out burgers before crashing.

must say though, the more and more i spend time in los angeles….the more i am beginning to think a move is in order. the people are just more friendly. everywhere we went that day people had smiles and were full of awareness. in orange county? it’s like people are too wrapped up in themselves to even notice there are other people out in public with them. like they go out wanting to have private parties instead of embracing the mix of folks that maybe could surprise them. depressing. i keep telling myself i like it here because i can pick and choose when i want to deal with the congestion of los angeles, but fuck that….los angeles is where it’s at. i’d rather be wrapped up in it if the alternative is where i’m at. time to start looking at some options. stay tuned….

dead man’s bones tonight!

by josh on October 31st, 2009

so headed up to echo park to take in a show from ryan gosling’s band, dead man’s bones. super excited! i tried to get tickets to a couple shows they did in sept. at a puppet house out here…..but no luck. so needless to say….i sprang at the chance to see the final show of the tour on halloween night here.

i am big time!

by josh on August 14th, 2009

….you know you’ve made it in this town when……

your work can be seen inside of a bus stop. haha!

a couple weeks ago i threw together a little poster for this funny girl friend of mine. i’ve helped her with some contact cards and stuff in the past….so apparently she likes coming to me when it involves the illusion of her being naked…on a poster. ha!

anyways, another friend of ours snapped this photo as she was out and about in LA today.

how funny…..

here’s the original thing in all it’s naked goodness:

solid jose moment.

by josh on July 3rd, 2009

jose’s (my co-worker) been getting some scamming bank calling him like 3 times a day for the last month. this is one of the sweet interactions he had with it. even funnier…is i am pretty sure all the little interns think we are nuts cause they overheard all of this. ahahahah!

i know how this goes though. i kept getting phone calls from some drive financial group looking for some dude that owed them money. it was ridiculous as they would call literally 5 times a day. needless to say….i feel for the dude, it’s close to the most annoying thing in the world.

12 years later…

by josh on June 23rd, 2009

so i hung out with an old high school friend this weekend. i found out he was out here about a year ago, but unfortunately i had just missed him at the time. he was off to DC for a new job. well, one shit ass economy and a lay off later….he’s back out in LA. so we got together over the weekend for a BBQ in honor of a friend of his that is moving back to missouri.

needless to say it was great to finally find someone out here on a bit of a familiar ground. i literally hadn’t seen him for 12 years or so, but you couldn’t tell by the end of the night. even better were his other friends that came out. i don’t meet that many ppl out here that don’t generally suck deep down, so it was refreshing to mingle amongst some of the better souls LA has to offer. instead of compromising my caring….i found myself genuinely surround by ppl that were not only just chill…..but interesting to boot.

see, some of them are post grad USC med students. so we hung out with a neurosurgeon, a general physician, and my buddy already has his doctrine in micro biology (or something). yikes…..but the neurosurgeon also is a musician, and this dude who’s BBQ it was….is a musician as well. so the night turned into us drinking like there was no tomorrow while listening to the 2 musically talented ones jam on a guitar.

was refreshing to get out and actually not have to pretend in front of the company i was around.

aimee mann’s xmas: a review.

by josh on December 7th, 2008

so yes, i went to the aimee mann christmas show last night at the wiltern up in downtown los angeles.

i’ll be the first to admit i was exactly thrilled about it being a “christmas” show, but wow was i surprised by how much more than that it was.  after getting some drinks and people watching….we found our seats about 10 mins before the show started.  the seats?  were ridiculous.  first row of the lodge…..which is basically the balcony in the wiltern.  needless to say, the theater isn’t that big, so we were right on top of everything.  then again, the wiltern rules in the sense that just about any seat was right on top of everything too.

well the show started with a few christmas tunes, while aimee introduced speical guests nellie mckay and grant lee phillips.  both were amazing and even played a couple solo songs themselves.

one of the more interesting aspects of the show, was a 3 part video christmas special that consisted of a sarcastic spoof of a christmas carol.  they split it up into 3 parts.  the first part consisting of aimee being awoken in bed by…..dun, dun, dun…..micheal penn!  he informed her of the 3 ghosts that would be visiting her.  the 1st ghost soon chimed in…..via ichat video conference on aimee’s laptop.  it was nothing short of hilarious for anyone that has ever tried to video chat…..with video freezing, things not working, having to switch to skype, the ghost not knowing where the cam button is on skype, and just……well, maybe it made more sense to anyone that’s tried to use that kinda buggy technology…..but was still funny for all.

next, comedian patton oswald jumped in the mix.  you may know him from things like king of queens and reno 911.  he sang along a bit and did a good 10 minute stand up set somewhere inbetween more music and the next video installment.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

the 2nd part of the video was pretty slick.  it started as aimee was singing chestnuts roasting……but she got interrupted by the ghost of christmas shows present via a live satellite feed.  the ghost, was played by none other than!!!!!  jim from the office!  john krasinski.

it’s was as equally as funny as the first part…..until……JOHN CAME RUNNING OUT FROM BACKSTAGE!!!!!  to not only surprise the crowd, but apparently aimee as well.  they sang a song together, and john was a horrible singer……but like it mattered.  fucking jim from the office comes running on the stage at an aimee mann concert?  only in los angeles.

YouTube

at that point aimee played a few normal songs, save me and wise up.  which made my panties wet.

other highlights included a great rendition of  mr. grinch from aimee and grant lee (here’s a video from last year just to give you an idea of how sweet it was).  grant lee also came out dressed up as willie nelson….and needless to say there were plenty of weed jokes to go along with the already stinky air in the theater.  also, the 2 cops from reno 911 came out to inform the audience of a special christmas charity this year for crackheads.  “christmas for crackheads”…..as in you can sponsor your very own crackhead for christmas this year.  heh.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

there was also an appearance from the hanukkah fairy.  she came out stumbling drunk…..and preggers with god’s baby.  hahahaha……she then preceded to cut some licks into a rap where aimee and the other backup singers helped her out with a chorus that consisted of “the immaculate conception of the hanukkah fairy”….and “the mutherfuckin’ hanukkah fairy”……hahaha.  was awesome.

the third video installment was just as hilarious as the others.  aimee tried recruiting michael cera (from juno, superbad)…..to be part of her show.  he was thrilled…..but he refused to play tiny tim.  hahaha, which, of course is the part they had in mind for him.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

the 3rd ghost to visit aimee?  none other than john. c. reilly!!!  who was just as hilarious as the rest of course…..but unfortunately he didn’t run out from backstage.

overall the show was just simply amazing.  filled with good music, suicide christmas jokes, some go obama fist pumps, and more than anything….an evening watching friends be friends.

aimee mann did the soundtrack for magnolia right?  well, patton oswald had a small part in magnolia.  john c. reilly of course the connection is there…..but grant lee phillips?  plays a lot with jon brion at the largo here in los angeles.  jon brion?  did the score for magnolia…..as well as collaborated with michael penn on various other projects.  michael penn is married to aimee mann…..

and it is in the humble opinion of this narrator that this is not just “something that happened.” this cannot be “one of those things…”

all in all….i recommend this show to anyone that has a chance to see it.  too bad she is pretty much only playing in california, and then off to the east coast to hit conn, mass, and new york.

yikes….apparently i am going to a show.

by josh on December 4th, 2008

going to see the aimee mann christmas show this saturday.  up in LA at the wiltern.

1. i didn’t realize it was a crappy “christmas” show when i signed up for this ordeal…..

2. i also didn’t realize it’s really more like a variety/comedy show either…

3. i am pretty sure i’ll see some asshole celebrity and tell them to fuck off in the course of the evening.  hah!

actually it should be pretty cool. to give you an idea of what i am dealing with?
